Random Miniature Monday

Hopefully this works...I am writing this Sunday evening and tying to time it out for Monday am....we will see.

This week we are going back to my beloved Trollbloods. This weeks mini is an Axer which was from the battle box (my every first troll purchase). When I bought the box the axe head was broken off. After going through the front desk and multiple email I never recieved my replacement part. This frustration almost kept me from painting them and learning to play......glad I changed my mind. I eventually bought the part through the store and I think he was painted up week one of the escalation league mention multiple times aleady.

I love this model both on the table and the sculpt itself. Infact looking at the new plastic one makes me sad. I might have to grab another metal on just to have around in case. I forgot he had a head swap until I just put him up. The head is from the bouncer and I used his stock head on the second impaler in the box set. Once again I used my cork rock base.

Skinner Done

Despite having only two days to paint him and a ton of stuff to do around the house I just finished this gentleman up. The matte varnish just dried and here is a photo. I will post more angles on Friday when I would normally post finished 'scrum pics. Next weeks model ???? need to pick one I guess. I think it is between a runeshaper, champ hero, Skaldi, or a regular....what do you think?

Stay on Target....

The little man decided he didn't want to cooperate last night and didn't go to bed until well after midnight. The fact that I didn't get to work on my scrum mini last night sealed the deal that this months PtT will be missed and therefore one of my goal for 2012 is already out the door.

On the bright side I have gotten a lot done on the skinner today (washes are drying right now) so I should be able to have him finished which will keep me on track for the 'scrum challenge. I have to help get some things done around the house this afternoon but hope to have finished pics of the skinner by afternoon tomorrow.

I am having a FADD attack however. I just placed an online order for a bunch of minis for Khador. I stumbled across a gift card that was going to expire on 2/29 so I had to place an order...right? I picked up a full unit of winter guard infantry and UA, a box of doom reavers, a blister of kayazy eliminators, and a winter troll. Winter troll?!? Yup I decided to pick up our most infamous mini to add to the Nog Kriel. I doubt he will ever see much table time but who knows. I figured if I am currently painting a highly maligned mini in the skinner why not another scoffed at model to hang out with him. I think when I get around to him I will do him up like the one featured in GnG (forget the issue number) with the extra fur sculpted on his back and shoulders. OK stuff should be about dry time to get back to work.

'Scrum Week 6

After getting off to a good start then doing nothing for a few day I finished up the gobber leader today after work. All in all I am pleased with him. He isn't perfect but he is done. Here are a few shots of the little guy, then a pic with his teammate, and then a week 6 group shot.

If I can get the boys to sleep at a reasonable time (not looking good as they are downstairs running around like wild animals) I need to start week seven's mini as I need to get him done by the end of the weekend.

On another note I received a package in the mail today. In that package was the remainder of my last PP order.

I picked these up as part of the $1 back issue sale. After adding these issues to my collection I am only four issues away from having them all. The problem is I am missing issues 1, 3, 4, and 12 with issues 1-4 being pretty hard to find (from what I hear)

Gobber Almost Done

Thank goodness for head starts. After getting the swamp gobber off to a good start I stalled out the last few days due to illness. There has been no hobby work over the last few days and instead I just flopped around the house doing little of anything. This am I got up and decided I needed to get back to work so here we are. He is 90% done at this point. I need to do a little highlighting here and there, finger/toe nails, bottom lip to match the other gobbers I have painted, and get the base set. I glued some cork on his base and just need it to fully dry before I basecoat it black.

I am going to do do the much maligned skinner for next weeks 'scrum challenge. The issue for next week is I will only have Friday night to Sunday night to get him done as next week will have no painting time. After that I think I am going to do the runeshappers I never got to prior to Templecon.

There is a 50pt tourney in Toronto at the end of March we are thinking about hitting. I have been tinkering with lists and I think one of then is going to be the Borka Family Reunion list I have written about in the past for Lost Hemisphere. When I was moving some stuff around the other day I found a third NiB hero which I forgot I purchased. This allowed me to come up with this list:

Borka Kegslayer (*5pts)
* Pyre Troll (5pts)
* Dire Troll Mauler (9pts)
Greygore Boomhowler & Co. (Boomhowler and 9 Grunts) (9pts)
Krielstone Bearer and 5 Stone Scribes (4pts)
* Krielstone Stone Scribe Elder (1pts)
Trollkin Champions (Leader and 4 Grunts) (10pts)
* Skaldi Bonehammer (3pts)
Gudrun the Wanderer (3pts)
Stone Scribe Chronicler (2pts)
Trollkin Champion Hero (3pts)
Trollkin Champion Hero (3pts)
Trollkin Champion Hero (3pts)

Due to the effects of the theme list everyone is a Faction model and the FA of the heroes goes up to three. The event has baseline painting requirements meaning I will need to assemble the last 2 champs, Skaldi, the third hero and paint all of them as well and my second hero who never got more than a basecoat prior to Templecon. Due to the tier bonuses all three units will have advance move so I should be pretty far up the board after turn one. I am not sure what I want to do for list two. I am going back and forth between Calandra, eDoomshaper, and pMaddy. The pMaddy list will either be my Hardcore list or a small twist on it. The Doomie list will be some form of a beast brick, and the Cally list will be some for of "Dygs of Doom" (I love those little terrors).

I think at this point I am throwing in the towel on trying to hit the February PtT. Unless I get hit by a bout of insomnia and paint the next two night through I just don't see the Scrapjack getting done by Sunday when I have troll goodies to finish up.

Random Miniature Monday

This week I selected a mini from an entirely different faction. This is a bloat thrall I painted some time in '08 I think? I like the look of the mini and picked him up to go with my Cryx arm. A large inspiration for my Cryx army was by Rob Hawkins' army in NQs 17-20 painted in the staff challenge (with Matt, Ron, and Quinton). When I picked up the model I was disgusted with the gaps and put him aside. He was actually assembled for me on commission by Dan "Youngwolf7" of Brushthralls fame. I asked him to take the goo out of the barrel and other than that he is a stock mini. This mini was one of my first attempts at photographing my minis (in fact might have been the first). I need to get some better pics of him at some point but wanted to go a different direction with today's RMM.

AM Progress

When I got home from work this am the house was really quiet. When I went into the family room I found everyone asleep on the couch so I took that time to get 30min of painting in prior to going to bed. I was able to put almost all of my basecoats down on the gobber leader. I know I said it once before but I love how quick these little guys come together.

I would like to get some more done on him but I am shot and need to head to bed. If I am lucky I can sneak another 30min later tonight before work.

Head Start

Trying to avoid a last minute scramble (like usual) I started working on this weeks 'scrum challenge mini. I decided to go ahead and do the second member of the swamp gobber crew (the grunt was lonely without his buddy). I basecoated the metals and put down my new replacement wash. The new wash is pretty darn close but not 100% but close enough I think. I am considering a few tweaks to see if I can improve it a touch but am also a little concerned I will mess it up. I also did the leather wraps around his feet and started on the wood grain on the bellow. All in all a pretty decent start. I love how fast these little guys paint up!

About a week ago I also started to work on the Scrapjack a bit to see if I can get him done for this months PtT. It looks highly doubtful I will get him done (there are so many little details) but only time will tell. I airbrushed in the basecoat on the green armor plates. I also started to put in the metals but got interrupted by the little guys so never finished that up yet. I think I am going to try and do battle damage on my Khador force so that will be a scary and exciting proposition. After seeing Conquest at Templecon my urge to fight for the Motherland once again has grown exponentially.

'Scrum Week 5

Got this bugger done and just inthe nick of time. I have 15 min to hit the road for work. I like the gobbers they paint up nice and quick. Here he is as well as a groups shot of the first five weeks.

Down to the Wire....Again

Week 5 of the 'scrum challenge is shaping up like the other....trying to get a mini done the last day. One of these days I will get one done early (ha). This is my first week back to work after 3 weeks off and these overnights are kicking my ass.

I said in my last post that I said I was leaning towards a skinner for this weeks mini but that has been scrapped for a few reasons. The first and foremost reason is I am nearly 100% out of my metal wash which I use on all my metals and troll skin as a shade (after a couple experiments I think I may have finally found a substitute). The second reason is he is a "normal sized" troll mini and will be tough to bang out in half a day. If my new wash works out right maybe next week of the skinner.

I am going to do the grunt from the swamp gobber crew as this weeks mini. He is a little guy and I should be able to bang him out quickly. I started putting his cork base together last night before heading into work and blocking some of the colors (no time for photos). I think the leader will have to wait 2 weeks to join him. I have a week coming up were I will only have two days to paint a mini for the challenge and he seems to be the perfect subject. Fingers crossed photos tonight of a finished gobber.

Random Miniature Monday

Random miniature Monday is back after missing a week due to Templecon. This week I am posting my Pyre Troll. This gentleman was the very last mini I painted in PG_theblklotus' escalation league. He was an add on which I didn't plan on painting for the league but just came together that last week. I guess it was a good thing as he won best painted single mini for the league and scored me a nice gift certificate to Comix Zone (one of our FLGS).

After being off from work for 3 weeks I have to go back tonight :( Even though it is an on week for me I hope to get some stuff accomplished this week. I have to get a 'scrum mini done for sure....leaning towards a skinner I think. I would also like to make some progress towards this months PtT from Lost Hemisphere. This months target is a character 'jack/'beat or one of the new league models. Seeing as I am not up for a conversion at this time and Rok isn't available I thought I would be skipping this months target. It was at this time I saw my unpainted Scrapjack and decided to give him a go for this month. He will be painted up in my 5th Border Legion scheme and I think I am going to attempt battle damage on this guy in the hopes of carrying it over to the entire Khador force (been getting the urge to fight for the Motherland again). On top of all this I want to try and finish up Les' Carver and get it back to him.....Lots to try and accomplish. If I can get my 'scrum mini and maybe one other done I will be happy.

Templecon Hangover/'Scrum Week 4

Hey all. I have been in a bit of a hungover state following the weekend that was Templecon. The week was a blast but tiring. I miss being able to just walk down stairs and grab a game whenever. I ended up playing in only 2 tourneys the team tourney and Hardcore. The team tourney was a bit of a hot mess as it took nearly 12 hours to play. I was going to try and play blood/sweat/tiers but we had a guy drop so one of our team was missing a man so I filled in. We did terribly with the team going 1-4 (only win was a bye) and I think I was 1-3 maybe 2-2. I don't really remember the last game to be honest. Here are some photos:

Hardcore was awesome. My pMadrak beast brick played well and I went 2-2. After winning the first game I lost the second game at dice down due to killboxing myself (dumbass). If I was one inch further in from the right edge I would have ended up winning on the 2nd tiebreaker. This was fine as it would have kept me in the winners bracket and I would have gotten smoked in the next round anyways (the guys I played round two played Jake aka Neutralyze in round three). I then proceeded to win game three and lose game four.

I was going to play a game with 'Gday late Saturday but it got too late and he headed up to bed. Instead I played another one of the Lost crew and played Valrus on one of the scenario tables. This game was a bit of a blur as well as I was pretty out of it by the end.

OK here is week 4 of my 'Scrum Challenge. I had a snafu with week three and almost didn't get it submitted. I forgot to send it to Goris so I had to call my wife from Templecon and have her send him an email with the attached photo. This phone called occurred at ~11:45pm Friday evening :/ I still haven't unpacked my minis from TC so no group photo this week but I will do one next week...promise. This week I did a Thrullg I had sitting on the shelf waiting to be painted. He didn't make the trip to TC so he was easily accessible.

Done...Kinda

Time is up and I have "finished' the minis for Templecon. They meet hardcore requirements but there a re a few things I still want to do on some of them. Ironically one of the only models I feel is truly done is the SSE. Anyways time to pack the car and hit the road.

Oh yeah this came today too. It is a little birthday present to myself consisting of a Saxon (needs to be converted so he isn't standing on a troll head), a full unit of scattergunners, and a bomber which is going to be used for an all metal Rok (with possible conversions)
