I did watch a tutorial online the other day that got me thinking about my incorporeal models and I decided to try it out on one of my pistol wraith for my Cephalyx/Cryx armies.
I just need to do the base and I'm ready to call him done. The mini is much closer to what I wanted then my previous green version and was way easier. I really wish I'd have figured this out prior to painting my risen because I'd much rather have them looking like this guy. After completing this mini I am part tempted to paint up an entire Cryx for using this style and make a full on ghost army.Noghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13683419095119444341noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925391383101315841.post-57489597691294179032015-07-09T21:52:00.001-04:002015-07-09T21:52:14.061-04:00Brainstorming Batman Crews (Batman)I still have no real idea how to play BMG but that will never keep me from one of my favorite past times.....list building. All minis in the following lists will be minis I own in some state of assembly. I'm currently working on my Red Hood (Joker) crew so I figured I should start to plan some crews for them to fight against. I could surely have them fight against Bane or some other "bad guy" crew but where's the fun in that? Time to throw up the bat signal and bring in the "good guys"
The first batman crew with two models not pictured. Lets break it down:

James Gordon: 70 rep/$200

Batgirl: 59 rep

Alfred Pennyworth: 30 rep

Alpha: 38 rep/$500

Beta: 27 rep/$300

Delta: 33 rep/$300

Agent O'Connell: 29 rep

Gotham Policeman (tonfa): 14 rep

Total: 300 rep/$1300

Hey Nog I thought you said you were talking Batman crews.....where's Batman? I know but this list is built under the Batman heading to allow me access to Alfred (the limited edition for pre-ordering the regular rule book). Alfred is so important because he allows me an extra $300 in funding and thus allows me to take Gordon's entire swat team. I filled in the last points with additional members of the GCPD. I think I have a lot of my bases covered with this list but I could be wrong.....if you know the game better feel free to comment :) I find when I am building BMG list I like themes and this is the Gordons (Jim and Barbara) with the GCPD.

Started painting up the shipping container. I'm pretty happy with this so far with very little work. I need to finish up the writing on both sides of the container and a few other details but that shouldn't take too much time just gotta sit down and do it. Time for bed see you soon....hopefully.

After I decided I was jumping in on the Batman Miniatures Game (BMG) I spent a lot of time thinking about terrain. I have played with the idea of scratch building terrain and have looked at multiple vendors that sell laser cut MDF buildings. I even back a kickstarter to help make my Gotham a reality.

This is just one of the building I will be getting from the kickstarter but I will do an entirely separate post on those when they arrive in the not to distant future.....I hope. Ok well onto the main portion of this post scatter terrain. The majority of this terrain was purchased from a company in Australia I came across years ago and just happenend to remember when I needed. As you can see most of this terrain was picked up to compliment the warehouse I will be getting from that Impudent Mortal kickstarter.
I mentioned in the Red Hood post that I picking up some Army Painter paints and this was why.

I thinned down the jumpsuit orange and shot it through the airbrush. Orange has pretty shotty coverage and these will need to be hit at least once more to get adequate base coat coverage but it does look like it is the "right" color for prison jumpsuits. I will most likely be using this color a lot in my BMG painting as I intend to paint all of Joker's clowns pants this color and will probably use it on Zsasz and the lunatics as well.

I know this post wasn't all that exciting but trying to get back in the groove of posting so figured I'd throw this up here. I have begun working on some of my scatter terrain as well seeing as it feels like the game required a nice amount of terrain to keep gun at the appropriate power level and give the table a proper Gotham feel.

I recently picked up some of the Army Painter Zombicide paints (mainly for the jumpsuit orange/jumpsuit wash) and decided to try out the filthy suit color on Joker's suit. I wasn't 100% sold when I began putting this color down but it has grown on me significantly and I think I am going to roll with it for not. If when all is said and done I decide I don't like it I can always just repaint it black without much issue. I would really like to pinstripe the suit but my freehand skill are lacking to say the least.

As a Reminder the crew is:

Joker (Red Hood): 90 rep

Clayface: 116 rep

High security prisoner: 48 rep

Turk: 25 rep/$400

Prisoner (stick): 17 rep

Total: 296 rep/$400

I'm still learning the rules so I am not sure if I get to buy additional gear with the remaining $600 cause the blackgate prisoners aren't technically Joker henchmen. If they are I ill throw on some gear to spice these guys up a little.

Well that's all for now have a great week y'all and more updates later in the week.....hopefully.
I decided to do a Joker crew using the exclusive Red Hood mini which was available from pre-ordering the Joker version of the rulebook. I have no idea if the crew I designed is any "good" but at this time I'm not too concerned about that just liked the feel of it. I have been tinkering around on http://bat-builder.com/ just designing different crews with the minis I own.

Above you can see the first 300pt crew I designed and intend to paint. I still have a very preliminary understanding of the rules but from what I read a "traditional" Joker crew is like the Cryx/Legion of BMG as they ignore rules and are dirty. I do love the look of the regular Joker henchmen but decided to avoid the "OP" version and just get into models I liked. I also figured by painting the Blackgate inmates early on I will be able to swap them in and out of a bunch of villain crews since they are one of the generic bad guy henchmen.....essentially kill two birds with one stone.

My first finished mini for BMG is Clayface. He is on a 40mm Secret Weapons base. He painted up really quickly as I airbrused his base color of P3 bloodstone. Once the base coat was dry I just went back and forth with different GW washes and drybrushing bloodstone and other orange/browns until the mini felt done. I then picked out the details on the fact and gave the mini a coat of satin varnish so it looked a little more wet. There is the first member of my first crew done....time to keep on moving.

It has been too long since I have posted anything and need to get back in the swing of things. I recently stopped working the night shift at work and have been getting used to "human hours" once again. I have been relatively inactive in the gaming department since Templecon (haven't played a game since in fact) and the last mini I painted up was Horgle for the donate or paint challenge. It seem to be a trend that after Templecon I go into a Wamachine rut and look at other games.....this year has been no different just a little more pronounced. I have been playing different board games with my buddy Greg. I've also picked up Forbidden Island and played that with my boys as well as King of Tokyo. I have also gotten back into the x-wing miniatures game by Fantasy Flight after they released the Scum faction and I saw they announce one of my all time favorite ship will be released in the next wave. I'd say the two things pulling my attention away from Warmachine have been getting back into golf and new game..

While I still enjoy Warmachine/Hordes my gaming attention has been pulled by the Batman Miniature Game (BMG) by Knight Models. The recently released their rules in print version with exclusive miniature available with purchase. I'm a sucker for "exclusive" miniatures so jumped in with both feet. I've picked up a bunch of minis and some MDF terrain to start playing games in Gotham City. I have also picked up the Devil's Shadow for my Warmachine mercenaries and hope to get them going relatively soon.

So just a quick post to get back in the swing of things and hopefully painted Batman minis and more will be showing up more regularly here. Have a great weekend y'all.Noghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13683419095119444341noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925391383101315841.post-21397788161450019742015-02-22T19:06:00.000-05:002015-02-22T19:06:32.769-05:00#DonateorPaint

Well it has been a little while since I have posted but I am still trying like hell to meet my challenge painting goal. The idea of having three fully painted lists and being able to play in IG is long gone but I am holding out hope that I can get the single list done.

I took some time examining my lists and have played around with an Ossrum list to try and make it "easier" to get painted in time. I have played this list in a test game and was happy enough with how it played to be willing to switch over to this for my challenge list (sorry Thexus but your time will come). Here is the list I am looking at currently and how far along each model is towards being painted:

* General Ossrum: 98% done just need some detail work but I can call him done
* Earthbreaker: ~80% done. I need to wash the yellow metals, highlight the purple sections, some detail work, finish the base, and do final assembly
* Gastone: 50% done.
* Galleon: 95% done. I need to pick out a couple details and then do final assembly
* Thor: 80% done. I need to clean up some sections I missed and do some detail work
* Dougal: 15% done
* A+H: 25% done. Basecoats are down on most sections
* Gobber Tinker: 20% done. I have completed the cart section but the gobber himself is only primed at this time
* Press Gangers: 30-40% done. I have been playing around with these guys trying out some new things so each mini is at a different stage. Some of the minis are close to done while others aren't fully basecoated.

If I had focused on this list a little earlier I think I wouldn't be under this kinda time crunch but what fun would that be ;) I have a unit of hammer dwarfs at like 80%, three units drudges at anywhere from 50-75% done, three drudges all at about 80%, and a couple other minis well under way but my split personality and delusions of grandeur had me all over the place. Sorry for the lack of updates and photos but the house computer was acting up and I have been spending the free time in the cave painting.

I doubt I will post again before I leave for Templecon on Wednesday but if you are going to be at Templecon feel free to search me out and see if I made it.....anyone in a Team Spite shirt can point me out.......and if you are there Wednesday night come have a birthday beverage with me....I'm sure I'll have a few.
I'm writing this blog post while I wait for the little guys to be fully asleep before Santa puts stuff under the tree. I had a fairly productive beginning to this week. It was fortunate I was able to get stuff done early as the rest of the week will be pretty much shot for hobby time what with Christmas and travel and what not.

After my last blog post it was only fitting I got this gentlemen done. All that's left to do is black out the rim of his base and put some grass tufts and static grass down. All the grass will be done on the army at once.

I assembled a unit of hammer dwarfs, primed them, did my three color airbrush for grey armor, and started to sponge on the battle damage (after this photo was taken). These fine fellows will most likely be in my Ossrum list.

Alexia1's risen. I decided I wanted no part of actually painting the risen and that there would be absolutely no time to paint them so ghostly was the only way to go. I did a multicolored airbrush and based them. All in all I am pleased with the quick and dirty results for all 20 risen and all that's left to do is black out their bases and obviously the grass like the good captain above.

Lastly I primed the nomad from the last challenge update and did the first color of grey on the armor plates. I didn't have time to do the highlights when I did the hammer dwarfs which is why he is lagging behind them.

Not photo'd: I basecoated the flesh on the old metal unit of drudges, started the grey sections of the earthbreakers arm plates, did a little skin work on Rhupert, and a few other minor things which aren't jumping to mind at the moment. OK my wife is telling me the boys are out color time to get to work.

Merry Christmas all and hopefully Santa leaves you all that shinny new toy you've been looking for!

I intended to have my cephalyx force be my Templecon painting challenge army but I may have to shift the challenge army over to my dwarf list. I have signed up for every event at Templecon currently but I think I would like to focus on iron gauntlet, team tourney (with Northblade and Adam), and hardcore as the "for sure" events. Seeing as IG is a three list event and needs to be fully painted it may force Thexus to the side for this convention. At the current time I am sure Damiano is one of my three lists. List number two will be an earthbreaker list run by either Ossrum or Durgen (I keep going back and forth). I run into trouble when I start trying to pick list number three. The final list is between Drake MacBain and Exulon Thexus. I have no delusion of grandeur and do not expect to reach the "gauntlet rounds" of IG but I don't think I can have a three list pair that will be unable to make a 75pt which is why Thexus is looking more and more like the odd man out.

I have to lock up my list and I think the Damiano list tis the one I need to sure up first as some of the units can potentially spill into my dwarf list. I recently played in an event and was running this Damiano list:

Captain Damiano (*6pts)
* Rocinante (9pts)
* Sylys Wyshnalyrr, the Seeker (2pts)
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts) (10pts)
Kayazy Assassins (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Kayazy Assassin Underboss (2pts)
Alexia, Mistress of the Witchfire (4pts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution (3pts)
Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist (2pts)
Kell Bailoch (2pts)
Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord (2pts)
Wrong Eye & Snapjaw (9pts)
* Bull Snapper (3pts)

I really enjoyed the list and while I didn't play it perfectly by an stretch of the imagination it did do what I wanted and I was poised to win when a dice spike of 17 on 3d6 at dice off 5 put Damiano in the dirt (killed him to the point). I have no problem with this as it is part of the game but it got me thinking about what I can build into my list to help avoid this from happening again. That brings me to list idea #2:

Captain Damiano (*6pts)
* Nomad (6pts)
* Sylys Wyshnalyrr, the Seeker (2pts)
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts) (10pts)
Kayazy Assassins (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Kayazy Assassin Underboss (2pts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution (3pts)
Gastone Crosse (3pts)
* Vanguard (4pts)
Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist (2pts)
Kell Bailoch (2pts)
Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord (2pts)
Wrong Eye & Snapjaw (9pts)
* Bull Snapper (3pts)

This list is obviously very similar to list number one except I drop Rocinante to a Nomad and dropped Alexia2. I like the idea of Alexia2 but I didn't get much use out of her in the game I played and I get the feeling she is a model you need to have some practice with to really make her sing and I'm just not going to have that time before February. Putting Gastone and the vanguard in there gets me some quality boostable guns to make up for the loss of Rocinante and the all important shield guard so I can potentially avoid that one final shot assassination which got me last time I played list one. I also like the idea of the possible Gastone/Galleon going into the earthbreaker list at 75pt if needed. I did a third list because I can't leave well enough alone and have to keep tinkering all the time. Lets take a look at #3:

Captain Damiano (*6pts)
* Rocinante (9pts)
* Sylys Wyshnalyrr, the Seeker (2pts)
Greygore Boomhowler & Co. (Boomhowler and 9 Grunts) (9pts)
Kayazy Assassins (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Kayazy Assassin Underboss (2pts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution (3pts)
Gastone Crosse (3pts)
* Vanguard (4pts)
Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist (2pts)
Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord (2pts)
Wrong Eye & Snapjaw (9pts)
* Bull Snapper (3pts)

Once again very similar but I was able to get Rocinante back into the list at the expense of Kell and the Nyss hunters while slotting Boomhowler and Co into the unit spot. While they will not be as effective at range as the Nyss hunters Boomhowler with deadeye can get some work done and really gum up the works as a tarpit unit. I feel I will be a little more tempted to cycle death march over to the Boomies from time to time which I'm not sure is a good or bad thing as it is really freakin' amazing on Kayazy.

I think for the present time I am leaning towards list number two but three is still in play. If I go with number three I can play Durgen/Earthbreaker and put the Nyss with him. If I go with list number two I'm more likely to play Ossrum/Earthbreaker and have boomies available if I want. Once I settle on the Damiano list I will be able to pick a dwarf list and once lists one and two are locked in I can see my 75pt options between the two lists and that will help select between Drake and Thexus for list three.

So what do y'all think? Damiano list 1, 2, or 3?Noghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13683419095119444341noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925391383101315841.post-7159011590089388832014-12-17T18:54:00.003-05:002014-12-17T18:54:49.978-05:00Templecon Painting Log Update #7I keep trucking along taking baby steps to my fully painted merc goal. Once again I didn't accomplish nearly as much as I would like but I did travel out of town to play in a tourney with my mercs so I guess that's acceptable, right?
First off I have no idea why these photos keep turning but I dont have time right now to monkey around with blogger. These are the standard Dragonforge bases I have used in the past. I did my standard four color drybrush on the stone consisting of P3 thornwood greem, bastion grey, and trollblood highlight, menoth white highlight on the edges. The dirt was washed with secret weapon dark earth pigment, once dry washed with vallejo sepia ink and then drybrushed with old GW graveyard earth and bleached bone. I also washed a little dark earth pigment onto the stones to add a little character. The reason I did these bases was I anticipated some minis getting finished and needing them.....lets see if I accomplished that shall we

While not pictured I also finished the yellow metals on Exulon Thexus, finished the leathers on Damiano (calling him done except for his base), painted and shaded the leathers boots on Hawk, and I did some work on the nomad which I may or may not be using in the Damiano list anymore. My dumbass may have added another mini to the log by looking at swapping in Rocinante instead of the nomad. Like I said my lists have been in constant flux as I can never seem to just settle into a list I have to keep tinkering and tinkering. Well I have to start getting ready for work

This week the progress was even less significant due to the Thanksgiving holiday, travel, and starting my week of work two nights early. In theory the latter should allow me to be more productive on my week off seeing as I'll have an extra two days but again that's purely in theory. Well pretty much all I did was work on some dark steel as outlined in the Forces of Cephalyx PDF:
I still haven't finished a minis but we are making progress so I'm hoping all of a sudden I will have a bunch done and start to feel like this is doable. I realize the Cephalyx are all I really "have to" finish but I'd really like to have three playable 50pt lists done. OK on to some photos. First up will be the 'casters I mentioned last week and where they currently stand (seeing as I didn't work on them this week)

First up is Drake MacBain. I tried out some battle damage on some of these new merc minis. Since I decided to basecoat all the armor via the airbrush I felt the paint chipping helped break it up a little and add a little more character.....it also seem to speed up the process a little which every little but helps. As you can see I may have been inspired a little by a wrestler from my youth :) "Whatcha gonna do Brotha when MacBain comes for you?"

Durgen! I did the same battle damage on Durgen as I did on Drake. All I really need to do on this little man is the yellow metals, the eye piece, finish his base and glue him down.

Last of the casters I worked on was Damiano. Like little Durgen I was feeling the ginger facial hair on the good captain. Damiano is probably the closest to being finished as I need to tighten up his leather sections, highlight the purple and do his sword blade.

Those where the photos I wanted to show to y'all last week but the computer issues prevented it from happening. Week #4 was a work week for me (never terribly productive) but I did get some work done and as Dory says "just keep swimming, just keep swimming"

To make my cephalyx list even harder to finish I've decided I want to drop one of the monstrosities in favor of a second unit of mind slaver and drudges. Here are the old school metal drudges cleaned and primed. As you can see I didn't assemble the metal cephalyx leader mini as I am trying to obtain a plastic one some how. So far I'm not having great luck getting my hands on one so I may have to use the metal leader.....anyone have a spare they'd like to trade for a metal one ;)

Next I assembled and started to paint a machine wraith. The machine wraith is one of the sweet Cryx minis that can be included in the cephalyx contract. He is a nice little one point filler that if an opponent is light on magic weapons can be great at contesting zones and flags.

I have been tinkering with my lists and decided I'd like to try Alexia2 in one of them. I assembled and primed four more thrall warriors which gets my total up to 6......should be enough, no?

I also started on Alexia's horse. I've used a couple different colors drybrushed for highlight and then washed the minis with two different washes. I need to go back and do some purple spot washes here and there and a few other colors to add interest but for such a quick and dirty start I'm pretty pleased.

Last for today are a couple pirate solos and Mr Carvolo. I had a Rhupert started previously but the feet got snapped of by "It wasn't me". Funny how that guy is responsible for everything.

I love this model. The Doc is so full of character that I had to slap a little extra color on him one evening when I had a spare 15min.

I didn't take any photos but I cleaned the last night risen needed to get me up to a full 20 for Alexia1. I think the only minis left to be assembled/cleaned are a unit of press gangers and the weapon attachments for the sea dogs.

One month in the books boys and girls and zero finished mini. Tomorrow it Thanksgiving so Im not sure how much I'll get accomplished over the next few days but maybe I'll bring a couple minis and some paint and try and lay down some color during down times. Have a great thanksgiving all and safe travels wherever you may be heading.

I'd love to show you some WiP photos (cause I am pretty happy with some of the work) but my home computer seems to have crapped the bed and I am banging out this pseudo-update on a break at work. I hope I can get everything sorted out at home and get back on track with photos and completed minis for update #4. Thanks and see y'all soon (fingers crossed)Noghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13683419095119444341noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925391383101315841.post-64102986585693103202014-11-12T15:00:00.000-05:002014-11-12T15:00:04.994-05:00Nomad ConversionIn my last Templecon painting log post I showed pictures of a nomad warjack I plan to include in my Captain Damiano list. This warjack had a small conversion so I figured I'd show what I did. I was never a huge fan of the original nomad's arm positioning and had plans to adjust but this just came together and I have to say I prefer this over my previous plans and it was simpler to achieve as well.
I used a saw to cut the sword blade and hilt off the nomads arms and cut the blade off the stormclad. I did my best to keep these cuts as clean and straight as possible so as to make attaching them to the new arms as easy and smooth as possible.

Once again despite not finishing any models I did get down to the cave for a couple quick painting sessions. The majority of the work came from one session and with the airbrush and some grey paints. Here are the fruits of those labors:

Durgen was painted with the grey triad I plan to carry over to many of my mercenary models with armor. The model was painted with the airbrush first covering the plates, then at a downward 45 degree angle, then from directly above. The colors were P3 greatcoat grey, VMA USA grey, and VGC stonewall grey. The color was then knocked down a little applying a very light coat of GW Badab black via the airbrush as well.

Lastly (but certainly not least) the two unit of drudges for my Cephalyx force had their skin blocked in with the airbrush. This was pretty sloppy but the other colors around the skin are dark and should go on very easy and cover the over spray with little to no issue.

I didn't really get a lot of painting time despite it being my week off from work. I didn't finish any models but I did work on a few so lets see where we stand:

We start with Mr Thexus himself. I started the metal sections on Thexus. I was trying out a different metal technique from usual as I was trying to get that dark iron feel from the studio Cephalyx. I followed the PP studio painting guide from the Cephaylx PDF and I have to say I am pretty happy with this metal and plan to work this in to my "regular" metal rotation. I also started putting down the yellow metal sections. These will require another thin coat to improve the coverage and then will receive my typical yellow metal treatment.

Oh the monstrosities. Two wardens three wreckers. The basecoat was applied with an airbrush. While not photographed I also blacked out the metal sections on one of the monstrosities in preparation for the metals. I plan on using the dark iron formula tested on Thexus for a large portion of the metal on these guys. The skin will be finished like the test bloat thrall (I think)

After playing my game the other day with Les' Durgen I knew he was going to be one of my future go to 'casters so I got my Durgen assembled (he has since been primed....ha)

Whats a dwarf 'caster without an Earthbreaker? I primed the Earthbreak via the airbrush. I am still trying to decide how I am going to paint this monster.

Last but not least the Galleon was also primed. This guy was primed using can primer which reinforced how much I dislike can primer. The results are fine but the application isn't as smooth and damn does the stuff stink......which make the wife crazy(ier) and you know what they say happy wife happy life so I'll be sticking with the airbrush primer. I am still trying to decide how I am going to paint this monster too.

That concludes the lackluster update for week one. This week is a work week so I do not anticipate great progress but I do need to finish something. I will most likely focus on finishing Thexus or one of the other 'casters I have in the works.

I figured it is time I should explain.

Those that have been following along with my little journey over the year know I have faction ADD and pretty bad. This year I had another flair up around Lock n Load. When PP spoiled Cephalyx at Templecon 2014 I wasn't interested much at all but once the spoiler started to hit NQ I started to get the itch. Then when my buddy Mickey said he'd ninja for me at LnL it was pretty much all over.
The beginning

Shortly after picking up the Cephalyx box I was texting with my good buddy Jaime aka Northblade about getting a 50pt Cephalyx force painted by Templecon. I am not sure when exactly or how it came up but Jaime said he was in and would paint a new 50pt list and have it ready for Templcon as well and the challenge was on. Me being who I am couldn't leave it at just "OK we'll both paint and see each other there".....no no no. I proposed that we will play a game with our newly painted armies in iron arena and the loser has to buy the first round of drinks and "if" one of us doesn't finish their army they have to buy the first 3 rounds......really no loser here right ;)

I was then chatting with another Canadian buddy and member of Jaime's meta Chadi and he said that he wanted in on the challenge as well. Oh boy oh boy not this changes things. Once again me being me "how about we all play our newly painted lists in Hardcore...OR....we build a second list and play the team tournament together?" This was met with surprising optimism by both Jaime and Chadi so we decided on the team tourney. The deal is one of the 50pt list needs to be fully painted to meet the requirements of the challenge. This second list is what put me into my total merc tailspin and sent me on a spending spree to fill out my mercs. I am going to try and have all of my mercs fully painted for Templecon but the "challenge" minis are the priority. You can see my painting log here: http://nogspaintingcave.blogspot.com/2014/10/templecon-2015-painting-log.html. I am going to try and get updates from the guys as we go along and hope to post their progress but I'm not sure how well that will work ;) I also think I have "inspired" one of my local guys (Nick) to paint up a 50pt Xerxis2 list as well. I guess I should get painting ;)

Hello all. I am going to try out something new today and see if it is something I'd like to do more often on the blog. I found an app which is suppose to help with battle report so I figured I'd give it a go today at the FLGS. I have been wanting to try Durgen out for a while now and almost brought him to the Dark Omen LCQ instead of Ossrum. I met Tim at the store today and he is getting back into Cryx after a couple years away from the dragonfather. I'm pretty sure I haven't used the app optimally so far and this may be a little clunky for a first go so apologies in advance. Any feed back appreciated. Onto the lists for today's game:

Turn 1 Cryx: Stuff ran, hell divers burrowed, clouds were put up.

Turn 1 Mercs: I poorly planned my deployment with some of the solos due to not playing this list before and forgetting about the clouds. Durgen redlined the earthbreaker and put primed on the steelheads. He then walked forward and did a carpet bomb hoping for some good drifts. I had decent drifts but sub par damage rolls killing one bile thrall and the three bane thralls hit with blast either failed to exceed arm or passed tough checks. The nightwretch too three points of damage. The combination of H&J, Nyss, and Eiryss took half of the unit of blood witches off the table whi then failed their command check. Due to clouds and the obstruction the earthbreaker walked forward and scattered a few rough terrain templates hoping to slow down the thralls if possible. Thor repaired the redline dmg, TAC dropped clouds, and last parts of the army repositioned.

Turn 2 Cryx: Helldivers popped up and re-burrowed. Vengeance moves and some charges/advances from knights and thralls killed a couple steelheads. Asphyxious cast excarnate on a steelhead which brought back a bile thrall luckily for me not in a great location to threaten too many models. He then cast caustic mist and teleported into his little bunker of cloud and obstruction.

Turn 2 Mercs: Primed was upkept and redline was allowed to drop. Steelheads charges bane thralls and knights trying to induce freestrikes for multiple kills via primed. Aiyana gave the Nyss magical weapons so they could continue to shoot down the blood witches. Reinhold tmoved into position to reload Durgen who then moved towards the left zone. Durgen took a case cracker *attack on the nightwretch and the reload shot at a bile thrall killing the bile thrall and a warwitch siren with blast dmg. The Nyss killed the remaining blood witches except for the hag and then took a CMA into the nightwretch with the remaining Nyss. After the turn a total of 10 bane knights/thralls (just the right number, for cryx) were dead and the nightwretch was scrapped. (Photo was taken partway into Tim's maintenance phase)

Cryx turn 3: Helldivers popped up as seen in the turn two merc pic. Asphyxious activated, moved up excarnated, and feated back the 10 banes I had killed. The bile thrall purged kill Eiryss clearing a line to Durgen. The helldiver slammed Durgen into the obstruction and then the liberal application of feated banes put the little guy into the ground.

All in all this was a fun game. Despite the loss I have to say I really enjoyed Durgen and plan to make him one of my go to merc 'casters going forward. This wasn't a perfectly played game on either side as we both made positioning mistakes at set up and throughout the game due to rust/lask of experience. On the bottom of two I thought there was an assassination attempt against Gaspy but I elected to skip it due to what I felt was a low probability. Hindsight being 20/20 I probably could have made this work and in looking over the photos I see some other opportunities I missed as well. I was pretty happy with the Durgen list I brought with me but would like to try out press gangers in the spot of the steelheads to get that primed unit stuck in sooner due to advance deploy. Hopefully this first attempt at a battle report wasn't too clunky and you were able to follow along ok. Any feedback greatly appreciated.

I took the bloat thrall as the test piece for my Cephalyx skintone. The bloat thrall is one of my favorite models in the PP range. I'm not exactly sure why I like this mini so much but I have always loved it. I have one bloat thrall for my cephalyx army and, while I am not sure how much actual table time he will actually see, he seemed like the ideal test subject. I was able to sneak a peek at the digital Cephalyx book and borrow some of PPs recipes and I plan to adapt some of them to my style/needs.
I basecoated the skin via the airbrush with a 1:1 mixture of P3 Ryn flesh:P3 Cryx Bane Highlight. I then washed the flesh with a wash made of P3 Sanguine highlight and P3 Traitor green. I think this was roughly 1:2. I then added a few drops of P3 Thornwood green and washed this in some of the deeper folds. My initial plan was to highlight via the airbrush with the original base color but I'm fairly please with my results up to this point so I've decided to proceed with the mini and I can always come back later if needed. In the top picture you can see that I've started to black out the sections that are going to be metal and just haven't gotten to the back and legs yet. I will be adding some blue and purple washes around the metal plugs to simulate bruising to add some more visual interest but I will have to finish the metals before this step. If all goes well the rest of the way with his skin I should be able to proceed with the monstrosities.Noghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13683419095119444341noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925391383101315841.post-62348331427683343552014-10-27T09:34:00.000-04:002014-10-27T09:34:28.552-04:00Templecon 2015 Painting LogIf you look at the Templecon website you can see by the countdown clock that there are only 101 days (at the time I wrote this) prior to the beginning of the convention. If I take out the few days leading up to the con that leaves me 14 weeks, give or take, to get my painting done. I have decided that the best way to accomplish my painting goals is to put the list to paper (actual and virtual) and try and plan out a points per week requirement. I intend to put the paper copy next to my painting station as a constant reminder/motivation/shaming tool. The list below if very large and intimidating at initial glance but this is nearly an all inclusive list and, while I'd like to accomplish all of it, only some of it "must" finish. A second factor that comes into play hopefully making this a little easier is the fact that a large portion of the list is already assembled and in many of the pieces are partially painted. I will be breaking the list down into three categories and color coding theme for purposes of the blog:

Primary
Secondary
Tertiary

As you look at the list below it should be pretty clear as to the theme for the minis in the primary category. These are the minis I need to finish for my "Templecon 2015 painting challenge" with my Canadian brothas Jamie and Chadi. If I can pull it off I'd like to post some updates here on their painting progress as well as one or two of my local guys I'm trying to rope in as well.

There is the list as it currently stands. I think I have included everything but who knows as I banged this out on break last night at work and I'm ready for a nap;) When calculating the pt cost of the minis needing to be painted I just assumed a cost of 5 pts per caster just like an assassination in SR. If my math is correct the list adds up to a grand total of 242 pts which will mean I need to accomplish approximately 17 pts/week to have the list fully painted the week prior to Templecon. The Templecon painting list is now on paper and staring me in the face time to get down to the cave and get to work (after I grab some sleep).Noghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13683419095119444341noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7925391383101315841.post-79292774845453901072014-10-25T07:54:00.001-04:002014-10-25T07:54:25.003-04:00Kickin' the Tires on Mercenaries Last weekend I borrow the wife's minivan and drove the gaming crew drove down to Gamers Gambit in Danbury Connecticut for the Dark Omen Invitational Qualifier (DOIQ)......and hopefully the Dark Omen Invitational (DOI) itself. The Saturday DOIQ was a 64 player SR2014 tourney with players gaining access to the DOI on Sunday. If I remember correctly we ended up with 57 players showing up to the event (we had two pay but not travel with us). The DOI was a 16 player masters which players qualified for via other regional events and was also a Warmachine Weekend Qualifier. The winner of the DOI not only secured a spot a WMW but would also have their airfare and room paid for which was pretty amazing. The Prize support for the weekend was pretty sweet as one player was randomly selected on Saturday to receive a 50pt list of their design and those playing the alternative event on Sunday (ie didn't qualify for the DOI) where entered in a second drawing for another army.

The lists I chose for the qualifier were as follows:

Highborn Covenant

General Ossrum (*5pts)
* Ghordson Earthbreaker (19pts)
Arcane Tempest Gun Mages (Leader and 5 Grunts) (6pts)
* Arcane Tempest Gun Mage Officer (2pts)
Greygore Boomhowler & Co. (Boomhowler and 9 Grunts) (9pts)
Herne & Jonne (3pts)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt (4pts)
Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Ios (3pts)
Goblin Tinker (1pts)
Master Gunner Dougal MacNaile (2pts)
Professor Victor Pendrake (2pts)
Taryn di la Rovissi (2pts)
Thor Steinhammer (2pts)

Four Star Syndicate

Captain Damiano (*6pts)
* Nomad (6pts)
* Sylys Wyshnalyrr, the Seeker (2pts)
Alexia Ciannor & the Risen (Alexia and 9 Risen Grunts) (5pts)
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts) (10pts)
Kayazy Assassins (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Kayazy Assassin Underboss (2pts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution (3pts)
Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist (2pts)
Kell Bailoch (2pts)
Orin Midwinter, Rogue Inquisitor (2pts)
Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord (2pts)
Wrong Eye & Snapjaw (9pts)
* Bull Snapper (3pts)

All in all I was happy with my lists but was VERY inexperienced with them. I played the Ossrum list twice prior to the event and I never played the Damiano list. I seem to have misplaced my SR sheet so I don't have everyone's name but I promptly went 0-4 followed by a bye and then I got paired up against one of our guys and won finishing the day at 2-4. Round one I got paired up vs Cryx and was a little sloppy with my caster placement and got pDenny'd. He feated, scourged, parasited, and then a couple Nyss shots later I was done. The next two rounds I deathclocked myself vs Legion and Trolls and I don't recall how I lost round 4 vs Protectorate. If it wasn't abundantly clear before it surely is now you shouldn't play brand new factions/lists at large events if you have any desire to do well ;) One of our guys qualified for day two so the rest of us got into the spell draft event on Sunday to try and win the next raffle army. Adam lost in round two of masters so we all dropped after the raffle was drawn and headed back home. While I was unreasonably disappointed with my results it was a fun weekend of Warmachine and hanging out with friends. I look forward to learning my mercs lists a lot better and hope to have a pretty firm grip on them by the time Templecon rolls around. While I haven't posted anything it doesn't mean I haven't been doing any hobby stuff. I have been focusing on my latest obsession mercenaries. This started back in June when Mickey scored me the Cephalyx bundle at Lock n Load. Then me being the obsessive compulsive person I am this bundle turned into mercs as a faction not just a side project. I have made some friendly wagers with some friends from the North (more on that later) and I have decided to put the Kriels down for the foreseeable future and focus on mercs until after Templecon at the earliest (except for Exigence release events).

There is pretty much my cephalyx force minis a couple pistol wraiths and some rearranging of points. Well I'm off for a weekend tournament in Connecticut with my crew. It is a warmachine weekend qualifier but seeing as I am playing borrowed mercs and have only practiced one of the lists one time I don't expect much ;)
