It's Here! Wild West Exodus Unboxing

Ok so yesterday when I was giving the run down of my pending kickstarters I said I thought Rivet Wars might be there today and WWX by the end of the month. It turns out I had my arrivals wrong. Last night when I woke up to go to work I had a box waiting for me on the front step and it was from Outlaw Miniatures! It turns out Rivet Wars will be here Tuesday the 10th but that's for another post...

Enough of my blabber pics pics pics pics:

I started to open the box last night prior to work but ran out of time (damn work gets in the way of fun)

While my 5 year old was at skating lessons today with the wife I set the 4 year old up with cartoons and got to the box for real :)  My painted test sprue enlightened hired hand looks on in excitement

Mesa Sytled Rocks First Attempt (kinda)

Last night (this morning actually) I decided to take my first stab at the mesa styled rocks for my demo WWX board. I was doing some laundry and catching up on Dexter when I got a little impatient and said those rocks should be dry enough where's my knife? My first attempt was an epic fail and got thrown out immediately the second attempt was better.

 Here is my "first" attempt

 The "good" side

 The "not as good" side

The little rock section above was all I did last evening. I was feeling pretty OK with the results and decided to play around with a little more today. The plan was to have the section above go on top of a larger flat piece to have a two stepped mesa. After the boy had their first skate lesson I headed to the basement and started carving up the bottom section:

Once again had some "good" sections and some "not so good" section but I am OK with the result to try and press on. These are in fact learning pieces so once/if I really get this down this item can go to the FLGS terrain bin or just get relegated to the sidelines.

Stacked up in their "final" configuration

An enlightened hire hand stops by to check out the progress.

I need to glue these section together and lay down some sand and stones to get a final idea on this mesa. As I said this is just a learning process but all in all I'd say an OK first go at terrain. I really want to make sure I feel comfortable with the process and my ability to replicate my results before I start hacking away at the rock facing for the cave wall.

Final Hours

The Wild West Exodus kickstarter I have been following so closely is coming down to the final three hours. The KS has seen a flurry of activity over the last 48hours and has gone up nearly $50k! This big bump has unlocked some really sweet minis. The first of which was a mini release for the Lawmen. Outlaw miniatures decided to push up some of the minis from the original $375K stretch goal due to the large amount of interest in the faction. Here are the concepts:

Since the release is a mini release and not a full release there are no heavy weapon hired hands yet or light and heavy support pieces. Even without these items I think the Lawmen may be my favorite faction of the lot now. due to the nature of the release these cannot be swapped out for starter boxes but can be added to any pledge for $60.

We have also unlocked the wave 2 light support options for the union and outlaw factions and the enlightened and warrior nation are around the corner. I liked the wave one lights but light these even better. OK so with the KS ending in ~3hours this will be one of my last WWX posts until we get some more previews or I can give the beta rules a good once over. If you are on the fence and want to jump on board time is running out.

Enlightened Hired Hand....Done

So I finished my enlightened grunt for Wild West Exodus. I just need to base him but since Outlaw is using a new style base for their minis I will have to wait until I get my hands on one.

The mini was fun to paint. I may have highlighted the paint a little too much but all in all I am pleased with how this gentleman turned out. Despite these guys not be zombies per say I did add a little gore to the stitching on the arm and to the face. I used the blowing technique described in Hordes: Metamorphosis.

The kick starter is in it's last 48 hours and moving along well right now. I am hoping to knock down a few more stretch goals over the remaining hours and unlocking some cool new toys. I still need to figure out which faction will be my "main" and to figure out how I am going to break down my pledge to optimize the utilization of my fund. Here is something Outlaw announced the other day that
I thought was really cool:

This miniature was announced the other day. I know you may be thinking so what they showed another mini. Well the really cool thing about this one is it was created by an anonymous backer. Here is the statement from Outlaw:

"A secret backer that would like to remain anonymous reached out to us with a cool idea.  He asked if he could personally fund the creation of a model and supply it free to all backers at the Fiendish and above levels.
This means that one of the guys that helped back this project actually will pay for the manufacturing of each of the free minis and the design work going into the model.  If that is not the coolest thing in the world I don't know what is."

Once again if you are on the fence or would like to know more swing by: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wildwestexodus/wild-west-exodus-sci-fi-western-miniatures-game

Here are a few more or the recent photos from Outlaw minis:

These models are updated version of previous 3d renders based on community response. In the picture there are one civilian, one Union hired hand, three outlaw hired hands, and the two outlaw heavy weapon hired hands. I love the outlaw with the .50cal on the crate.

Homestretch for Wild West Exodus

Well one of the two kickstarters that I have backed and been following very closely ends in one week. Wild West Exodus is coming down the homestretch and will close on St Patricks day. One of the game creators was recently on a podcast and had some really cool information:

http://gamerslounge.coda.net/2013/03/08 ... st-exodus/

I have to say the story spoiler about Lincoln I thought was really cool and has me more excited to make an army list featuring Lincoln and Pinkerton. I also thought that the background info on the Warrior Nation was really cool but also made me realize there are really no "good guy" faction in this game. and that everyone has their fair share of "evil"

I also have done a little more work on my enlightened grunt. I highlighted up his pants and washed the leather straps holding the exoskeleton in place. I have to say this mini has been really fun to work on and I am excited to paint more minis for WWX. The finish touches will include popping a few highlights on the metal sections and a could small splotches of blood.

Lastly Outlaw did two more previews yesterday showing of the wave 2 hired hands for the enlightened and the "terrain" piece civilians of the west.

I really like these new hired hands. Curse you Outlaw can you make one of the factions a "dud" so I don't want to buy all of them? They are also talking about retooling the wave 1 grunts a little. I hope they don't change them up too much as I have been really happy with the test one they sent me.

Here are the civilians. I say they are "terrain" because they are not going to game direct game play rules per say but they can be used as meat shield by your characters and you can have them take a bullet for you. The discussion on the kickstarter says you can even use actions to drag them around with you so you can have them soak up that first wound whenever it is needed. I think this a really cool concept. I don't plan on adding them to my pledge at this time but I like the concept a lot.

Undead Everywhere....

So seems like I have been over run with the undead. The undead are hitting me from two different game systems. The first is from Wild West Exodus the sci-fi western kickstarter I have been going on an on about recently. The second is zombicide which also has a KS running. I have been playing a bunch of single games of zombicide recently and also got a game in the other night with two buddies. OK on to some painting.

As you may recall the good people at Outlaw sent me an enlightened grunt so I have been banging away on him. My hopes is to finish him to day as I have a Warmahordes tourney tomorrow which will take up the entire day. Here are a few shots of the poor little guy....

While the photos aren't great I am happy with how he is coming together. Prior to receiving this mini I was really not that interested in the enlightened but I like them more and more as this guy progresses.....curse you outlaw do I really need all four factions! At this time I am calling the skin and shirt done. The metal is nearly there just need to hit a few highlights to call them finished, the pants will require a couple highlights as well. I think I am going to change the suspenders and straps to P3 rucksack tan but not 100% on that yet. What do you think?

A few more random photos from WWX before I switch over to my next undead item. These two photos appeared on the WWX kickstarter page and facebook today. The first is for the yet unlocked Wyatt Earp boss of the lawmen faction:

The second photo is of the warrior nations heavy support option the Great Elk. I have been leaning toward the warrior nation since the beginning of the kickstarter as my primary faction and this guy does not disappoint.

Ok that is it for WWX at this time. If you like what you see head over the kickstarter page and take a look at some other sexy minis. The KS has 9 days left.
